I listened to the CEO of Exxon/Mobile today. He tried to paint a picture that they are in the same boat as we are only their numbers are higher. Each project or R&D costs in the billions and he needs to satisfy the stockholders first off. Well my understanding of profit is that amount of money after expenses, wages, dividends for stockholder, R&D are all paid for. Still shows 40 billion and only 3% R&D is a scandal.

That is why hybrid vehicles shut themselves off when you are stopped. No point in burning gas when you are not going anywhere. It was an odd feeling the first time I drove my Insight to stop at a light and the engine stopped.

It's all quite sad really. Yesterday there was an accident on the interstate so each time I knew we weren't moving for a few minutes I turned of my car. A lot of people were doing that. You have to do anything and EVERYTHING to save gas. We usually cut our grass 2 x's a week. We have been going 7-10 b/n cuts just to save a few gallons here and there. Sad really

For those who can't plant a garden, a lot of towns have farmers markets. Buy from them. It helps them and saves you money!

Which unlucky reporter got this column in today? Agreed buy from farmer's market. Higher quality, fresher, and cheaper.

We are 11 days from a holiday/the beginning of summer for most--first vacations of the year. Guarantee the national average will be well over $4. I took vacation that week so I don't have to drive 46 miles a day for work and I am staying HOME!!!!

Yes, I am sure that the majority of use have noticed this increase. For those with even a little patch of land, plant a garden. For those of us living in stacked caves, condos and apartments, the choices are much more limited.

Do newspapers have anything better to do than report record high gas prices everyday. We see it everyday while we are on the road..so please dont rub it in...

No surprise here. A few more months and it should finally match up with Europe. At least Europe has excellent transportation alternatives, unlike our failing railroads!

I just made a trip from west coast to east coast and back, over 6000 miles and I didn't pay over $3.79 until I got back in California,$4.39 and I always stopped at major brand stations. California is getting ripped off more than the other states.I even saw diesel for $3.99.

Compared to Canada that is a bargain price. If we stopped using the car to go around the corner we would need less and they would be forced to lower the price in order to sell there quota of the market.

No short term answer but we need to drill in ANWAR and off the coast. We have enough oil to take us part our lifetime if we just go get it. The oil companies have the profits to spend. Get Congress of it's backside and let them drill where we have oil, build new refineries and nuclear plants. Then tell the oil cartel to go away!!!

Not here. Up 55 cents in a year? Try 50 cents in a month! But I do notice the Hilton Head area I live in is running about 3.65 - 3.75 for regular. April 1st we could pay as little as 3.14 if we shopped around, by May 1st 3.65, ugh! I guess we're the lucky ones to be less than the national average. Somehow I don't feel very lucky...

I would love to see a station at $3.81 right now...every station around us is at $3.95-$3.99/gallon, with a slight few over $4. Something needs to be done, or there is going to be a lot more stay-at-home-moms, since we wont be able to afford the gas to go to work AND pay a babysitter.

Gas Buzzer; And what is your vested interest? Do you own shares in the oilbarons empire? Do you work in the oilbarons cartel? Why are you happy?
Have you no compassion for those; who can not afford the high cost of gas; who are not able to invest in oil?
Have you no compassion for those less fortunate than you seem to be?
I can, so far, afford to get by even with the over $4.00 a gal. here in Canada but I believe, I, as others have the right to complain about the high cost of gas when the oilbarons earn record profits on refined oil and gas.
I must say that I am amused that you use the term "whining" when we complain about the cost of oil and gas. Does that mean that any time we complain we are whining. REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RISING COST OF FOOD caused by the fuel to the trucking industry! Remember that when the economy of your country declines and your dollar does not buy as much as it did before! Remember that when your country slides further into depression! Please remember also that your declining economy drags other countries also.
You will have to obey the self imposed new commandment :Thou shalt not whine [complain}!
When your country goes into decline your own budget will be hurt even though you may get by!!!!

I know its off topic, but why do they refer to gasoline as "unleaded"? I haven't seen leaded fuel for sale since the '80s. (You remember the '80s, when gasline was under a dollar a gallon at times.) Seems eons ago now.
