Auto safety chief defends agency over Toyota recalls

Detroit Free Press -- WASHINGTON – The chief U.S. auto safety regulator told Congress today that regulators had done their jobs in pressuring Toyota to recall 5.6 million vehicles in the United States for problems linked to sudden acceleration.

David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also said he will consider a bevy of new rules in the wake of the Toyota recalls, but that he has enough resources at the moment to watch the industry.

Federal officials have said NHTSA had to press Toyota into its recalls, including a December visit by acting administrator Ron Medford to Toyota's headquarters. But several lawmakers have questioned why NHTSA did not order recalls earlier, despite thousands of complaints and eight probes involving sudden acceleration dating back

The "bevy of new rules" is more knee jerk reaction and political posturing that something with much thought. No manufacturer wants to recall several million vehicles - the publicity is bad and the cost is high, so Toyota's response seems like a normal response from any auto maker...

Ya, wow, I watched his testimony - what a joke as he sat there saying - "hey, we diod our job, we kept the pressure on Toyota, and they voluntarily made their own recalls, that's why we didn't have to report them to you people in congress."

They vehicles are sold here, so why wasn't something done sooner. It's always knee jerk reactions after the fact. Just glad our toyota wasn't one of the cars recalled.

Whether the failures are do to incompetence or taking bribes, staff at government agencies are not held responsible for their failures so they have little reason to change.

Lack of resources is only an excuse if the agency publicly says so before the problems occur. Waiting until after the problem occurs means it it no longer a valid excuse.

However if they had also impressed front he start to Toyota executives (who don;'t know how to listen) that customer safety is job #1 in America... we might not have had all these problems of late.

Yeah, Toyota will bounce back. But the ground from which they bounce is going to be very hard and they have yet to hit that bottom. And I cannot believe they will wver bounce as high- at least not in my lifetime. These lawsuits are going to hurt them for decades.
